Irene Johnson, 89, of Scranton, passed away peacefully on Sunday evening, surrounded by her loving family at Allied Services Hospice Center, Scranton. 

Irene was born on April 9, 1934, in Scranton, where she remained a lifelong resident. Irene was a survivor and a hard worker. She kept an immaculate home and helped provide for her family by working in cleaning services for various local companies. Irene survived cancer and Covid. She was of the Catholic faith. Irene had many hobbies, including playing bingo, crocheting, shopping, polka and Elvis music. She really enjoyed her trips to McDonald’s.   

Irene's family would like to thank those who cared for her: the staffs of Telespond Senior Services, Elan Skilled Nursing Center, Geisinger Community Medical Center, Allied Services Hospice Center, and Dr. Kenneth Sebastianelli.  

Left to cherish her memory are two sons, Michael Spindler, of Scranton, and Joseph Spindler (Maggie), of Copperas Cove, Texas; two daughters, Kathylee Johnson-Zygmunt, R.N., of Ocala, Florida, and Gail Richards (Michael), her caretakers, of Scranton; a granddaughter, Meghan Spindler of Copperas Cove, Texas; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.  

In addition to her parents, the late Joseph and Stella Tillman Martinski, Irene was preceded in death by her husband, William Johnson, and her former husband, Joseph Spindler; a son, Carl Spindler; a sister, Cecilia Benjamin Smith; and a brother, John Martinski. 

A Memorial Service will be conducted on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at the Frank M. Regan Funeral Home, 323 William St., Scranton. Family and friends may call from 2:00 pm until 4:30 pm, when a Blessing Service will be held with Rev. Cyril Edwards officiating.

Burial will be private at Cathedral Cemetery, Scranton, at the convenience of the family.
