John Hargrave, 72, of Carbondale, died unexpectedly on Thursday at Geisinger-CMC. He was preceded in death by his wife of 25 years, Sharon Landress Hargrave, who died in 2003.

Born in Flushing, N.Y., on April 13, 1951, he was the son of the late Edward and Marilyn McAllister Hargrave. A graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, class of 1969, he briefly attended college before committing to a long and rewarding career as a steamfitter in the construction industry, as a proud, 50+ year card-carrying member of Steamfitters Local 638.

A man of simple needs, John was strong and smart--he possessed a rock-solid work ethic, and protected and provided for his family daily, earning the nickname Superman along the way. Though quiet, he would honestly speak his mind, with commentary often flavored by a decidedly sarcastic sense of humor. Given the chance, John enjoyed the peace and solitude that fishing always afforded.

John is survived by a son, Adam Hargrave, and wife Angela, Harrisburg, two daughters, Ann Hargrave, and fiancé Shawn, Allentown, and Sarah Erickson, and husband Johnathan, with whom he resided, Carbondale, two sisters, Patricia Spinella, Maryland, and Susan Sherron, North Carolina, seven grandchildren, Krystal, Ryan, Kaitlyn, James, Eve, Xander, Leilynn, and Jaxson, a great-grandchild, Jane, and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his beloved parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a cherished daughter, Gabrielle.

Funeral arrangements are private. John will be laid to rest in Cedar Park Cemetery, Paramus, N.J., beside Sharon and Gabrielle.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Frank M. Regan Funeral Home, 323 William Street, Scranton. Share condolences and stories on the funeral home website at freganfuneral.com
