Mark Hopkins

March 17, 2026

Mark Hopkins, 61, of Scranton, died on Tuesday evening, March 17, 2026, at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center after a sudden and brief illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, Michelle Verrastro Hopkins, who died in 2022.

Born in Scranton, the youngest of four children born to Donald J. and Mae Farrell Hopkins, he was raised in North Scranton and was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, Class of 1982.

Mark loved cars and people and found his calling in the car business. He worked at various area automobile dealerships for 41 years in sales and management positions. He concluded his career at Eynon GMC where he worked for the last 27 years as a sales manager and was beloved by the staff, his customers, and the community he loved.

Earlier in his life Mark suffered from alcohol and substance abuse. He refused to be defined by it and overcame his addiction through faith, dignity, and perseverance. He was active in the local AA program and was a coach and mentor to countless others. He was sober for over 20 years.

Mark was a devoted husband to his wife Michelle and was happiest at home with her and his beloved pet cats – Alfi, Bandit, and Fluffy. Fluffy was the last surviving cat at 18 years old and died on the same day that Mark passed. It was a fitting end for them all to be together.

Down-to-earth and thoroughly authentic, Mark had a quick smile, a sharp sense of humor, a contagious laugh and always a kind word. He will be sorely missed by all those who had the good fortune to know him.

Mark is survived by a sister, Deborah Hopkins, Dalton, two brothers, Donald J. Hopkins, Jr., and wife Donna, South Abington Twp., and Robert P. Hopkins, and wife Ilaya, Rochester, Minnesota, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth Mae Hopkins.

The funeral will be conducted on Friday, March 27, 2026, with Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 am in Holy Rosary Church, 320 William Street, Scranton. The family will receive relatives and friends at a Visitation on Thursday, March 26, 2026, from 5:00 – 7:00 pm and Friday, March 27 from 8:45 – 9:45 am at the Edward Knight O’Donnell Funeral Home, LLC, 323 William Street, Scranton. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
